A Tribute To Stupidity

Or how a Greenockian went to Macclesfield

Get the first bit over with quickly: Greenock 1960, born at home. Learned guitar aged 12. Moved about a bit and ended up being dragged kicking and screaming to Kendal in 1972.

Next bit: Played in 2 bands with my brother between 1976 and78 (Can't remember first, second was Baton Rouge). In 1979, auditioned for Silverwing and became their guitarist. Highlights =  being in first issue of Kerrang, having centre page spread in Sounds, major tour with Diamond Head (watched by Lars Ulrich). Left.

Next bit: Recorded Macaxe Attack demo. Reviewed in Sounds by Geoff Barton. Sold all 500 copies. Went to London and recorded with Big Amongst Sheep and did several gigs. Left. Rejoined Silverwing. Played Salford Glam Festival with Silverwing with brother Al  having joined on guitar and vocals. The gig was recorded and became the Live And Kicking LP.

Then: Recorded LP Bride Wore Red during which time we became Pet Hate (see LINKS) and signed a record deal with Heavy Metal Records. The single was a cover of Mott The Hoople's Roll Away The Stone. Then followed a tour supporting Hanoi Rocks. After that, we recorded Bad Publicity which was produced by Eddie Leonetti, who also produced Angel and Legs Diamond, who were favorites of ours. After recording the album, I departed for the final time and decided to have a rest.

Next bit: Worked with my Dad (Duncan) in 1987 and with a Kendal band called The Presence. After leaving, formed a band called Kick with Fran Tollerson, and after he left, Ruth Beavis joined and we formed Afandou. Meanwhile between 1984 and 92, I worked with Kevin Read, writing and recording many songs at Cavalier Studios in Stockport. Took a year out and was offered keyboard duties with Kendal band Freeway (Jonty Martindale's band). Played keyboards between 1991 and 94. The band became The Fabulous Picasso Brothers  and I have left and rejoined rather a lot, mainly as guitarist, though I am currently on keyboards again. I joined Storm in 1997 and have been there ever since. The end (well I hope not)

My influences include Duncan Macfarlane, Frank Sinatra, The Sweet, Eric Clapton, Queen, 10CC, Thin Lizzy, Kiss, Nick Drake, John Martyn, David Bowie, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Paul Gilbert, Prince, John Mayer, among others.
